Pond Liners
There are a wide array of pond liners available in Australia, but those made from butyl rubber and the modern LDPE (Low Density Polyethylene), EDPM (Ethylene Diene Propylene Monomar), and reinforced polyethylene/polythene kinds are amongst the most commonly used. There are now much greater degrees of tear and burst resistance, as well as UV (ultra violet) stabilization in the pond liners of today.

Pre-formed Ponds
In the past the only pre-formed ponds were made from fibreglass. Nowadays, while there are both fibreglass and fibreglass composition ponds available, composition plastics and rubbers have come to the fore. Amongst these there are a number of Australian manufacture which have been designed specifically to resist the often harsh climatic conditions of this country. Moulded and vacuum formed plastic ponds are also available and these make cheap and cheerful starter ponds for the budget conscious.

Concrete Ponds
Although concrete ponds have fallen a little from favour, with the great surge in popularity of pond liners and pre-formed units, they are still commonly constructed especially for keeping koi. Concreting techniques have changed little over the years, although additives of various kinds can improve both its quality and colour. Except for small constructions, concreting is best left to the professionals.

Raised Ponds
There are a number of different options available with raised ponds. For many years they were regarded as permanent brick or timber constructions, and although this is still partly true, they are increasingly becoming available as self-assembly packages, often including a pump, planting containers and other accessories. They are also useful water features for the disabled and elderly.
