| Lotus Registration Collaboration The International Waterlily and Water Gardening Society is the International Registration Authority for cultivars of Nelumbo. As such it is responsible for registering Lotus cultivars world-wide. Since its establishment work has gone ahead steadily, but predominantly with recording those cultivars developed in western countries, or oriental ones that have found popularity outside the Far East. There is much work to be done with establishing a cultivar checklist as most Nelumbo were developed in Japan and China. |

| Virginia Hayes, the International Registrar, on a recent visit to China and the 2nd International Lotus Symposium, has reported that increased collaboration is forthcoming from the scientific community in China. There will be a forging of partnerships to compile a checklist, with supporting documentation, working with various noted Chinese researchers and growers. The task will be an enormous one, for the Institute of Botany of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, has records of some 900 cultivars all of which will require careful translation and transliteration. Astilbe Breakthrough This is a recent introduction, which won a silver medal award at the famous Plantarium exhibition in Holland, and looks to be an especially useful and versatile hardy plant for the bog garden. The soft pink mid to late summer blossoms are produced in neat spires above foliage that emerges bright green and matures to rich burgundy. It currently appears to be quite widely available both in Europe and North America. A more recent and closely allied introduction called ‘Color Flash Lime’, is likely to be equally useful, but has light green foliage which intensifies to yellow as the summer progresses. It too has pink flowers, and appreciates dappled shade. It is presently freely available in North America. Photo:PPH |

New Hybrid Waterlily Yasuhiro Satou has surprised scientists by creating a distinctive new waterlily cross. It is believed to be a hybrid between members of the Anecyphya and Brachyceras groups of waterlily until recently thought by botanists to be very difficult, if not impossible to achieve. The parents of the hybrid were Nymphaea gigantea and a white form of Nymphaea colorata. Photo: Yasuhiro Satou. For further details click here. |

Originating from China, it is a straight, upright-growing plant, which reaches a height of 5-8m (16-26ft). The shoots are edible. When the young stalks are rubbed the scent of incense is released. It enjoys damp conditions and flourishes in wet soils at the water’s edge. ![]() Click to join pondmessenger |
